Optimizing Seismic Capacity of Existing Masonry Buildings by Retrofitting Timber Floors: Wood-Based Solutions as a Dissipative Alternative to Rigid Concrete Diaphragms

چکیده
The inadequate seismic performance of existing masonry buildings is often linked to the excessively low in-plane stiffness timber diaphragms and poor quality their connections walls. However, relevant past studies events have also shown that rigid could be detrimental for do not necessarily lead an increase in performance. Therefore, this work explores opportunity optimizing retrofitting floors by means a dissipative strengthening option, consisting plywood panel overlay. On basis experimental tests previously formulated analytical numerical models simulating response these retrofitted diaphragms, nonlinear incremental dynamic analyses were performed on three case–study buildings. For each structure configurations analyzed: as-built one, one having with concrete slabs strengthened panels. results showed additional beneficial hysteretic energy dissipation optimized can largely analyzed buildings, while only localize These outcomes contribute efficient demonstrating once more great potential wood-based techniques comparison use reinforced creating diaphragms.

Uncertainty in Seismic Capacity of Masonry Buildings
Seismic assessment of masonry structures is plagued by both inherent randomness and model uncertainty. The former is referred to as aleatory uncertainty, the latter as epistemic uncertainty because it depends on the knowledge level. Pioneering studies on reinforced concrete buildings have revealed a significant influence of modeling parameters on seismic vulnerability. However, confidence in me...

متن کاملInvestigating Efficiency of Shotcrete for Retrofitting Masonry Buildings
One of a feasible and efficient method to retrofit structures is spraying shotcrete which is widely applied around the world. Shotcrete is concrete with fine aggregates which are sprayed through a hose and by air pressure coat at high velocity onto a surface. In the current research, three masonry schools from different regions of Iran are selected. The retrofitted wall surfaces have been prepa...
متن کاملSeismic retrofitting of non-engineered masonry in rural Nepal
One of the greatest causes of casualties in major earthquakes around the world is the collapse of non-engineered masonry buildings (those built without engineering input). Yet by definition non-engineered structures remain largely outside of the scope of modern engineering research, meaning that the majority of those at risk often remain so. A further barrier to realising research in this field...
متن کاملDissipative Bracing-Based Seismic Retrofit of R/C School Buildings
A dissipative bracing system incorporating pressurized fluid viscous spring-dampers has been studied for many years by the authors as an alternative seismic protection strategy for new and existing frame structures. As a concluding stage of this activity, a set of demonstrative case studies was examined to illustrate the enhancement of seismic performance and the economic advantages guaranteed ...
